Lani Cabral-Pasao, Founder & CEO of Angels Over Us

    Meet Lani Cabral-Pasao

Founder & CEO | Senior Care Nurse Specialist | Certified Dementia Practitioner

Some people choose a career in caregiving. Lani Cabral-Pasao was called to it — by culture, by faith, and by decades of witnessing what it means when families have nowhere to turn.

Lani was born and raised in the Philippines, where caring for elders is not a service you hire — it is a sacred family obligation. She earned her nursing degree from the Perpetual Help College of Manila and later studied at Collegio de Sta. Isabel and the University of Nueva Caceres, building a clinical foundation rooted in both medical excellence and the deeply human side of patient care.

When she came to Houston, she brought all of that with her.

Over the course of 37 years in nursing, Lani built expertise that spans clinical care, geriatric medicine, dementia care, and healthcare operations. She became a Certified Dementia Practitioner and a recognized Senior Care Nurse Specialist — credentials earned not just through coursework, but through thousands of hours at the bedsides of patients that others had given up on.

The moment that defines her most happened quietly, without fanfare. When her charge nurse fell gravely ill with no family to provide care, Lani stepped in — and cared for her without pay for nearly two decades. From 2004 to 2021, she showed up not because it was her job, but because it was the right thing to do. That is who she is.

In 2009, while volunteering at her church, Lani noticed elderly members of her community struggling without adequate support. She didn't write a report about it or attend a committee meeting. She built a company. Abba Gentle Healthcare was founded that year, followed by Angels Over Us, and later A-Assure Hospice — creating a full continuum of care for Houston families from in-home support all the way through end-of-life.

Today, Lani leads a family of senior care organizations serving Houston and surrounding communities — not as a corporate executive, but as a nurse, a neighbor, and a woman who believes that every elder deserves to be treated like family.

    Rooted in Malasakit

There is a Filipino word that has no perfect English translation: malasakit.

It means something deeper than compassion, something more personal than professionalism. It is the act of genuinely caring — not because you are paid to, not because someone is watching — but because another person's wellbeing matters to you the way your own family's wellbeing matters to you.

Malasakit is the foundation of everything Angels Over Us does.

Filipino culture has always placed the care of elders at the center of family life. Pagmamahal — love and deep devotion — is not reserved for the young. In Filipino families, age is honored, not hidden. Grandparents are not managed; they are cherished. The elderly are not burdens; they are the living roots of the family tree.

That cultural truth shapes how our caregivers work. It is why we insist that you will never be cared for by someone you have not personally met and approved. It is why every care plan is designed by a registered nurse, not a scheduling coordinator. It is why we show up on the hard days — not just the scheduled ones.

When you bring Angels Over Us into your home, you are not hiring a service. You are welcoming people who were raised to believe that caring for an elder is one of the highest honors a person can receive.

That is malasakit. And it is what Houston's families — of every background and culture — deserve.

Proudly serving Houston's diverse community, including our Filipino-American families, since 2009.
